MSC Cruises Announces Partnership with Olympus

(Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.)-- MSC Cruises recently announced a partnership with the Olympus Corporation of Japan, world leader in the manufacture of optical systems and innovative Non-Destructive Testing devices used in industry. This agreement is designed to guarantee the safety of machinery and equipment aboard the MSC Cruises fleet using the latest technological innovation to be employed in the shipbuilding industry, the portable video-scope IPLEX-FX.

The IPLEX-FX features a 6.5” anti-glare, transreflective LCD monitor, a highly portable control unit housed in a magnesium chassis which is water/dust/shock proof and a flexible probe that can be used to inspect engines, hull bulkheads and auxiliary equipment and installations. By using Remote Visual Inspection, MSC Cruises technicians will quickly be able to check the remote, hard-to-access areas without having to perform expensive disassembly. It is particularly useful for identifying occlusion of tubes and filters, cracks, and corrosion due to rust.

The probe is resistant to harsh environments, can be immersed in fluids and features an articulating tip controlled by joystick, which can be rotated through 360 degrees. The head of the instrument features interchangeable optical tip adaptors, incorporating a high-intensity LED illumination system and a CCD sensor to capture high-resolution images and movies that can be viewed on the monitor and stored in the control unit.

According to Emilio La Scala, General Manager MSC Cruisetech, MSC’s target is to maintain high standards of efficiency, reliability and security for the entire fleet.

“Thanks to the video-scope we can guarantee smooth routine and ad hoc maintenance of our ships, achieving substantial financial benefits by avoiding unnecessary delays and intervening in a targeted, planned and timely way,” said La Scala.

Innovation and quality are fundamental, unwavering principles for the Olympus Group, according to Gianpietro Rebughini, Managing Director of Olympus Italia.

“The vast experience and continuous evolution of medical endoscopy has contributed to the development of a technology for high performance industrial applications, now perfected in the new IPLEX FX range,” said Rebughini.

MSC Cruises Changes its Itinerary on MSC Melody

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – MSC Cruise Lines always places the safety and comfort of its guests before all other considerations. For this reason, some minor changes have been made to the route taken by cruise ship MSC Melody on its three-week cruise from Durban, South Africa to Genoa, Italy.

Given recent developments concerning possible acts of piracy against ships transiting the Somali east coast and the Gulf of Aden, MSC Cruise Lines now adheres to the navigation recommendations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Maritime Security Centre for the Horn of Africa, a coordination center run by the EU Naval Force to safeguard shipping in the region. While in this region, MSC Cruise Lines’ vessels adopt a range of additional security measures to minimize any risk.

In accordance with the recommendations, the company has slightly modified the itinerary of its cruises on MSC Melody from South Africa to Italy in order to ensure total security and peace of mind for guests and crew. The new cruise route is about 400 miles longer than the previous itinerary, maintaining a greater distance from the coast of Somalia.

To allow for the extra time at sea, MSC Melody will no longer call at the Egyptian port of Safaga; however, the ship will continue to call at Aqaba, Jordan and Sokhnan, Egypt, allowing guests to enjoy the extremely popular excursions to the ancient wonders of Petra and the pyramids of Giza, respectively. The new cruise itinerary also offers more time in the Seychelles with an overnight stop at Port Victoria.

The overall duration of the cruise is unchanged at 22 days and 21 nights.

MSC Cruises Crew Members’ Bravery Officially Honored

A ceremony held on board MSC Fantasia on 2 April 2009 at the port of Palma de Mallorca (Spain) officially recognized the bravery of four crew members who rushed to the aid of an overboard passenger. The ceremony, involving the port authorities, the island’s council and MSC Cruises’ CEO, took place on the MSC Fantasia, the most beautiful ship in the world.

On 5 March, while the new ship was moored at the port and passengers were disembarking, three mooring bitts become detached simultaneously in strong winds, resulting in the ship moving away from the dock and causing a disembarking guest to fall into the water.

The four crew members immediately dived in to help the man, who was rapidly brought to shore and taken to a local hospital. He was subsequently transferred to his home town of Milan (Italy), where he was discharged from hospital on 22 March.

The four crew members commended for their bravery are:

Mr Salvatore Caso – Chief Crew Steward, from Italy, aged 52

Mr Lalopua Faamoe – Able Sailor, from Samoa, aged 29

Mr Naim Samsuddin – Able Fireman, from Indonesia, aged 37

Mr Andrian Williams – Housekeeping Cleaner, from Madagascar, aged 37

Attending the ceremony were Ms. Francina Armengol, President of the Mallorca Council, Mr Francesc Triay, Chairman of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, as well as MSC Cruises’ CEO Mr Pierfrancesco Vago, Captain Giuliano Bossi, and the company’s Country Manager for Spain, Mr Emiliano Gonzalez.

Following the traditional exchange of crests between the Port Authority and the ship, on behalf of MSC Cruises Mr Pierfrancesco Vago presented each of the four crew members with a plaque honouring their bravery. Thanking the four crew members, Mr Francesc Triay then presented each one with a further commemorative plaque.

Mr Vago said: “I am delighted that our guest has made a rapid recovery and is now back in his own home. I would once again like to offer my heartfelt thanks to these four courageous members of MSC Fantasia’s crew. By diving into the sea without hesitation to help our guest, not only did they show great bravery, they also demonstrated the selfless team spirit that makes MSC Cruises such a special organization. A special thanks also to Captain Giuliano Bossi, who took immediately control of the ship. The incident was living evidence of the guidance to our Crew by our Captain to be selfless, courageous and to react without a second thought”.

MSC Fantasia is the latest addition to the most modern fleet in the world. She is the largest ship ever made for a European cruise operator, carrying 3,959 guests in unprecedented comfort thanks to features such as the exclusive MSC Yacht Club area and the extensive MSC Aurea Spa wellness centre. MSC Cruises Takes Customer Service to New Levels

MSC Cruises Reviews its New Pairs of Ears

Fine service is all about listening. No one understands that better than MSC Cruises. Which is why the acclaimed cruise leader has added two new pairs of ears to its highly-trained service teams.

All guests on the luxury MSC Cruises fleet are now offered the support of a dedicated Guest Relations Manager with a very special role, while ships in the Fantasia class also receive their own Concierge.

The story behind the new Guest Relations Manager is typical of MSC Cruises’s passionately uncompromising approach. The company’s attentive customer support team noted that traditional service structures only become aware of certain disappointments after the event, often only when a cruise is over, discovering for example that a guest traveling on their own would have liked to dine seated with other singles who spoke the same language, or that arrangements had not been made for a guest’s special vegetarian menu.

MSC Cruises’s dedication to preventing this led it to create the new figure of Guest Relations Manager especially to ensure similar problems could be attended to promptly, even when they have nothing do with MSC Cruises.

The Guest Relations Managers - who speak several languages fluently - are consequently available throughout every cruise, providing a single point of contact and the reassurance of being empowered to handle any issue immediately.

Guests will now benefit from the services of their own Concierge with all the skills and contacts to cater for even the most exotic requests, from private visits and exclusive bookings on shore to special events at sea. As a result, the most beautiful ship on the seas now offers by far the most beautiful service.

The new Concierges and Guest Relations Managers take MSC Cruises’s outstanding service even further into a class of its own, typical of the company’s passionate insistence that perfection is always achievable, so every guest can enjoy the cruise of their dreams.

Perhaps the most popular activity is the free autograph session at the end of the cruise.

The following itineraries will be Baseball Greats theme cruises:
